Hi LUG,
For those of you who weren't at Tuesday's meeting, there's an event
coming up on Feb 4 at the McKimmon Center called Open Source 101. It's
put on by the same folks who run All Things Open. I've been told that
various companies will be prowling about looking for talent -- names I
heard included GitHub and Red Hat -- so definitely consider putting it
on your calendar ;-)
Details:
*Open Source 101 - Saturday, February 4 - Students and staff just $10*
*NC State students and staff must use code NCState to register*

Hi LUG,
I'm happy to report that last week's planning meeting went smoothly and
we're looking forward to this semester. Next week we will be holding an
Intro to Linux talk, which will cover a broad set of topics including:
* What Linux is
* A little bit of history
* How it differs from other operating systems
* How to install it
* How to get started using it
If you're new to Linux and want to learn some more (or ask some
questions) come on by. If you're already a Level 9 E1i7e *NIX User, you
should still come, because we will also be providing pizza courtesy of
the LUG :-)
Additionally this year we are trying out a new format for meetings.
Members are welcome to suggest recorded tech talks that they found
particularly educational or interesting; we'll pick the ones we like
best and set aside a few meetings during the semester to hang out and
watch them, probably with food as well. You can use the forum thread to
suggest talks.

See you all Tuesday.

Hi LUG,
Lots of announcements to make.
I'm happy to say that we had a great turnout for our first meeting and
completed elections for this season.
Our new officers are:
* Quentin Young -- President (a.k.a. POTLUG)
* Stephen Worley -- Vice President (a.k.a VPOTLUG)
* Beata Eaton -- PR Officer (a.k.a. PROTLUG)
* Jay Popkin -- Treasurer (a.k.a. TOTLUG a.k.a Big $$ Money)
:clapping:
And to those of you who attended the last meeting, new members and
seasoned ones -- nice meeting you all!
Following our Planning + Intro to Linux meetings, Tuesday's (1/31)
meeting will be a social dinner, where we hang out, eat food and talk
tech. There's a thread up on the forum where you can vote for where we
will eat (or suggest other places!):
https://lug.ncsu.edu/discourse/t/tuesday-1-31-social-dinner/66
If you don't care for a forum account but do plan on attending feel free
to unicast me @ my email with your preference.
Additionally, if you have suggestions for a talk that you would like to
give, please post it in the talks thread! The topic post mentions
recorded talks but that thread can serve as the general talk thread. If
you have a topic you would like to know more about, post it in the
thread; if there's a topic you want to give a talk on, please say so and
we'll set it up! Anyone who wants to educate us on a topic is welcome to
do so and if we get enough interest on a particular subject I'll go snag
a speaker from somewhere else.

As mentioned on our website and briefly at the last meeting, members are
granted shell accounts on our server, short. If you plan to attend the
LUG this semester, let me know and we will be happy to set up an account
for you.
Remember that Open Source 101 is on Feb. 4th, and they're looking for
volunteers!

Finally, earlier this week I uploaded a Code of Conduct on our public
GitHub repo. It's adapted from TriLUG's CoC. Take a look and let me know
if you have any suggestions, concerns, improvements, etc; or better yet,
submit a pull request :-)

Hello Quentin! Hope you're doing well.
Wanted to reach out one last time about Open Source 101 coming up this
Saturday..
In addition to the sessions being presented by industry experts from all
over the world *there will now be four (4) major tech companies onsite
recruiting - Red Hat, CapitalOne, SAS and IBM*. It's a tremendous
opportunity for members of your group.
Also, you might have seen the free passes made available by Red Hat late
last week or early this week. If you or anyone in your group missed those
the cost to attend is just $10 and includes all programming, lunch and
networking. It's a great deal.
We sincerely hope you can participate..
Let me know if you need anything at all or have questions..
Thanks! See you Saturday!
Todd

Hi LUG,
For this Tuesday's meeting we'll be hosting Barry Peddycord III,
ex-President-of-the-LUG (EXPOTLUG) and current employee of Cumulus Networks,
who will be giving a talk on OpenStack. For those of you not familiar,
OpenStack is a free software cloud computing platform originally
co-developed
by NASA and Rackspace that sees extremely widespread use across the
datacenter
computing space. It is licensed under Apache. I personally am looking
forward
to this talk because that's as much information as I can give you :-)
As usual we'll be meeting in EB2 3001 @ 7:00 P.M.
Anyone desiring Linux / BSD / general computing help, or willing to help
others, is welcome to stick around after the meeting!
Oh, and there may be pizza ^_^
See you all Tuesday.
